Summary

Spire is seeking a Utility Meter Reader to work in the Birmingham, AL operation. This role will be resposible for reading Gas Meter using Automated Meter Reading ( AMR) technology and manually. 

Duties and Responsibilities

• Be able to walk over varying terrain, bend, stoop, crawl, adapt to exposure to all types of weather conditions, etc. while assisting Service and Distribution Mechanics.
• Must be capable of operating a motor vehicle in the performance of the job duties assigned to this position.
• Communicate with customers, employees and supervisors, responding to inquiries resulting in mutual understanding.
• Observe, recognize and report improper and potentially hazardous conditions in working on or around Company distribution facilities, customer appliances, or fuel line installations.
• Lift and carry loads up to 50 lbs. including large meters, tools, equipment and other items necessary to the installation and repair of gas equipment, meters and regulators.
• Turn off and remove residential meters.
• Disconnect gas service for non-payment
• Work various meter maintenance orders
• Conduct yearly meter inspections
• Read gas meters using Automated Meter Reading technology and manually

• Ability to work in a self-motivated environment
• Ability to complete job related data entry via manually, computer and hand-held devices
• Ability to communicate policies & procedures with customers
• Read, understand and complete required documentation associated with the completion of customer service requests and related activity.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• N/A

Required Education (certifications, licenses)

• Highschool diploma/ GED
• Current and valid driver’s license

Required knowledge, skill and abilities

• Read, understand and complete required documentation associated with the completion of customer service requests and related activity.

• A minimum of one year of customer service experience required

Physical demands, environment and schedule

• Outdoor Work Environment - exposed to all weather conditions, in construction areas with uneven surfaces and in areas exposed to loud audible noises.
• Work includes extensive time in the field, where duties require exposure to heavy construction equipment, outdoor elements, and physical exertion.
• Overtime and /or travel may be required
